The timeless pain relieving properties of cold-pressed Mustard Oil were known to ancient Indian Vaids (sage-doctors) thousands of years ago. They used these properties to create various formulations to relieve muscular, joint and even dental pain, and these formulations, treatments and practices have been documented extensively in various Ayurveda treatises. A group of research scientists working with elderly patients put these pain-relieving properties to the test. In elderly patients the onset of musculoskeletal problems is fairly common, and these problems invariably cause pain – especially aching joints and arthritic pain.
The research team designed a medical intervention based on the ancient Indian knowledge that cold-pressed Mustard Oil was a natural and highly effective pain reliever. Accordingly, the team established a regimen of using Mustard Oil to massage painful joints and other affected areas for a sample of elderly patients. The pain (before the intervention) and relief (after the intervention) were assessed using a Visual Analogue Scale.
The findings of the study were published in the International Journal of Orthopaedic Nursing. The findings indicate that the intervention led to a significant reduction in pain for all the participants in the study, establishing a clear direct correlation between the use of Mustard Oil (in its cold-pressed form) and reduction in the pain being experienced by the participants.
This is particularly good news because the common practice in the medical fraternity is to use analgesics for pain relief – and these have several undesirable side-effects like nausea, diarrhoea and indigestion. In some cases, they can even affect the heart, liver and kidneys. In contrast, Mustard Oil is 100 per cent natural with no chemical or synthetic additives and, therefore, has no side-effects.
Mustard Oil is rich in a compound called Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA) which gives the oil powerful anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. In addition to relieving muscular and joint pains, massaging with Mustard Oil is also proven to relieve pain cause by rheumatoid arthritis. Moreover, Mustard Oil also contains selenium which reinforces the oil’s pain relieving properties because of selenium’s ability to reduce swelling and fight inflammation.
Thousands of years later, medical science continues to prove that the confidence that ancient Vaids had in Mustard Oil was accurate and well-placed.
