A few days ago, one of the posts on this blog explored the question of “Which is the best edible oil?” The answer that resonated from various quarters was: Mustard Oil – and this was based on the extensive health benefits and heart-friendly attributes of mustard oil, duly ratified by research. In today’s post we specifically look at what doctors are saying.
In a recent newspaper article, a nutritionist at Columbia Asia Hospital summed it up very succinctly. She pointed out: “A heart-friendly oil should be cholesterol-free and trans-fat-free, low in saturated fat, high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat, and should have an ideal N6 to N3 ratio as well as a high smoking point. Mustard oil meets all these criteria.”
The nutritionist’s statement gives you not one but seven reasons that make mustard oil the best edible oil. Just imagine – an edible oil with antioxidant, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. No other oil can give you this health-packed array of benefits!
But this rediscovery of mustard oil began several years ago. In fact, long before this chorus of “Mustard Oil is the best” started gaining ground it was eminent cardiologist Dr S. C. Manchanda who had taken a decisive stand on mustard oil. He believes it is the ultimate edible oil for the Indian heart. In fact, his advice to patients for ensuring heart health is simple: Quit smoking; take up Yoga; and switch to Mustard Oil as your primary cooking medium.
Doctor’s orders… and also, some excellent advice for health-conscious people!
