The Knowledge of the Vaids

The ancient practitioners of the healing science of Ayurveda were called Vaids. These were men of knowledge who were hailed as sage-physicians. In fact, some of the revered sages were called Vaidyaraja (physician-kings). And amazingly, even 3000 years ago, these sages were aware of the diverse therapeutic properties of cold-pressed Mustard Oil.

The three main treatises of Ayurveda were the Charak Samhita, the Sushruta Samhita and the Ashtanga Hridaya. All these books of knowledge demonstrate a deep understanding of the properties of Mustard Oil and how these could be leveraged for health and healing.

The ancient Vaids knew that Mustard Oil had powerful pain-relieving properties stemming from the natural anti-inflammatory capabilities of this oil. They used it to relieve joint and muscular pain and also for arthritic pain. They also knew about the natural antibiotic properties of this oil and used it to make formulations for treating infections within the body and on the skin as well – especially because they understood the inherent antibacterial and antifungal properties of Mustard Oil.

These wise men also knew that Mustard Oil was a natural stimulant and they used it to improve the functioning of the liver and the spleen, and to increase the secretion of bile and digestive juices. Various formulations using Mustard Oil were developed to boost appetite, tone the digestion system and improve metabolism. In Ayurveda, Mustard Oil was also used for improving blood quality and blood circulation, and for detoxification. Such detoxification was triggered by improving liver function and by enabling the sweat glands to enlarge and expel toxins effectively during pre-bath massage using Mustard Oil.

Cold-pressed Mustard Oil also has high protein content and is rich in natural antioxidants and vital Omega-3 essential fatty acids. This gives the oil some very useful hair care capabilities. Applying Mustard Oil (and Mustard Oil-based formulations) moisturises the scalp, prevents dandruff, nourishes hair follicles, strengthens hair strands, prevents hair fall and reduces premature greying.

Yes – those wise, wise sages certainly knew how to use Mustard Oil!
