A Healthy Low-Cal Snack

With the COVID-19 pandemic still raging out there, most of us are assiduously sticking to home-cooked food – but we tend to compromise when it comes to snacks. When those mini hunger pangs strike, we reach for our favourite munchies, many of which are not really healthy. Most of them are packed with processed ingredients and fats – especially trans fats. So let’s make a quick snack item that is delicious and savoury but at the same time low on calories.

Today, we are going to make Spicy Spinach Dumplings. Each dumpling has just 17 calories – so have as many as you want.

The ingredients that you will require are given below.

  1. Spinach (Paalak): 300 grams

  2. Gram Flour (Besan): 1 tablespoon

  3. Yogurt (Dahi): 2 tablespoons

  4. Whole Wheat Flour: 2 teaspoons

  5. Mustard Oil: 2 tablespoons

  6. Green Chilli: 1

  7. Asafoetida (Heeng): Just a pinch

  8. Sugar: Just a pinch

  9. Salt: to taste

The ingredients mentioned above are for making ten dumplings; adjust the ingredients proportionately to suit the number of dumplings you require.

Finely chop the spinach.

Finely chop the green chilli.

Take a large mixing bowl and add all the ingredients. Mix well to create a slightly moist mixture that you can shape with your hands. The Mustard Oil should create the desired texture. However, if you find that your mixture continues to be too dry you can add more of the yogurt.

Next, divide the mixture into ten equal portions and use your hands to shape each portion into a flat round shape (like a small Tikki).

Place the dumplings in a cooker and steam for around 7 minutes or so.

And that’s it! Your Spicy Spinach Dumplings are now ready to be served. Arrange them on a platter and serve them while they are hot.

You would have noticed that there is no cooking involved in making this dish. Instead we used steaming. Moreover, spinach is rich in soluble fibre and an excellent source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K1, Vitamin B9 (folic acid), iron, calcium, potassium and magnesium. So you now have a delicious snack that’s packed with vitamins and nutrients… and also low on calories. Enjoy!
