Mustard Oil: An Ancient Remedy for Dental Health

Updated: Jun 6

The ancient Indian healing science of Ayurveda has described the use of a mixture of cold-pressed Mustard Oil and salt for promoting dental health. When this mixture is regularly massaged on the gums and teeth, it keeps them strong and healthy.

Scientific Validation of Mustard Oil's Benefits

This ancient premise was put to the test by doctors at the Government College of Dentistry at Indore. A series of clinical trials was carried out to check whether regular massaging of the gums with a mixture of Mustard Oil and salt actually had a preventive effect on periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory process that causes damage to and even destruction of the periodontium – that is, the tissues that surround and support the teeth. In some cases, periodontal disease may even result in loss of teeth.

The Study's Findings on Mustard Oil's Efficacy

The study found that the powerful anti-inflammatory properties of cold-pressed Mustard Oil can prevent periodontal disease. Moreover, the natural antibacterial properties of Mustard Oil also help in keeping the gums healthy by fighting the onset of bacterial infections. The study, therefore, concluded that a habit of massaging the gums with a mixture of cold-pressed Mustard Oil and salt can, in the long-run, be significantly beneficial for gingival and periodontal health.

How to Use Mustard Oil for Dental Health

If you want to try this very useful natural treatment, all you have to do is take a tablespoon of cold-pressed Mustard Oil and add a teaspoon of rock salt (Sendha Namak) to it. Mix the two ingredients together using your index finger, and then use the same finger to rub the mixture on your gums and your teeth. Massage for around two minutes. Then keep your mouth closed for a minute – and finally rinse your mouth. The Mustard Oil, as mentioned earlier, has anti-inflammatory and infection fighting properties. The purpose of adding salt is to use its mild abrasive action to dislodge plaque, remove stains and clean the teeth.

Incorporating Mustard Oil into Your Daily Routine

Use this simple home remedy to add a gum massage regimen to your daily routine. You should ideally do it around ten minutes before you brush your teeth. Feel the difference – and smile!
