The United Kingdom Dietary Guidelines for the prevention of cardiovascular disease have unequivocally acknowledged the importance of long-chain Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in reducing the risk of heart disease. These guidelines also highlight the importance of choosing diets that are rich in Omega-3 because it is a nutrient that cannot be synthesized by your body – you have to obtain it from external sources in the form of nutrition.


The health benefits of Omega-3 stretch far beyond cardiac functioning. It is known to lower your blood pressure and protect you from hypertension; reduce the risk of stroke; and retard the build-up of plaque in arteries. Some studies also indicate that a daily intake of Omega-3 reduces the risks associated with certain types of cancer.


On the basis of the UK Dietary Guidelines, the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy recommended an Omega-3 intake level of 0.2 milligram per day per person. However, in an article in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, a team of researchers from the UK have suggested that the 0.2 milligram per day per person level needs to be reviewed and the team felt that the intake should be significantly higher. In fact, the American Heart Association recommends a much higher intake of Omega-3; it says 1 milligram per day per person is an ideal intake.
