Mustard Oil: The Health Powerhouse
Mustard Oil: The Health Powerhouse

A study published in the International Journal of Current Microbiology & Applied Sciences highlights the multifaceted health benefits offered by cold-pressed Mustard Oil – a broad spectrum of benefits that remain unmatched in comparison with other cooking oils that are in use today.

The study indicates that Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA), an essential fatty acid found in Mustard Oil, reduces the adhesion-aggregation tendency of blood platelets, leading to a significant reduction in the risk of getting a heart attack. The study also cross-referenced several human-based studies which found that early asymptomatic coronary disease was absent in mustard oil-consuming participants, indicating that Mustard Oil may indeed have powerful cardio-protective properties.

The study also reiterated the near perfect Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio of Mustard Oil. The WHO recommends a ratio of 5:4. In the western world, the consumption of highly processed foods, saturated fats and trans fats has upset this ratio adversely; some American diets have a ratio of 20:1 or higher – leading to obesity, heart disease, hypertension and many other lifestyle diseases. In comparison, the WHO data puts the Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio of Mustard Oil at 1:1 – very close to the recommended ratio. The study in the International Journal of Current Microbiology & Applied Sciences found the ratio to be 1.2:1, thereby ratifying the WHO ratio.

One of the highlights of the study was its emphasis on the cold-pressing method of extracting Mustard Oil. The study found that this method of production preserved the nutritional value of Mustard Oil – in particular, the natural antioxidants and natural Vitamin E present in the oil.

In short, the study reiterates a point that we have made several times on this blog: Mustard Oil is comprehensively healthy.
