The Dangers of Ultra-Processed Foods and the Benefits of Mustard Oil

There is a dangerously high prevalence of ultra-processed foods all around us and we often consume these without realizing the health implications. Foods like potato chips, biscuits, refined flour, reconstituted meats, sugary drinks and ready-to-eat meals are extremely unhealthy and can significantly increase the risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis. Moreover, a study published in the British Medical Journal clearly shows a direct link between breast cancer, prostate cancer and colorectal cancer, and the consumption of ultra-processed foods. According to this study, a 10 per cent increase in the intake of ultra-processed foods can increase the risk of cancer by more than 10 per cent.

Now a new study conducted by the Ohio State University and published in the Journal of Brain, Behaviour and Immunity indicates that the consumption of ultra-processed foods can have a strong inflammatory effect on the brain. In the case of elderly patients, such inflammation could also lead to memory loss.

There is good news, however. The study also found that the inflammatory effect of ultra-processed foods on the brain could be reduced to a significant extent by increasing the consumption of food that was rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids.

For Indian consumers, there is a simple way to get a daily dose of Omega-3 Fatty Acids – cold-pressed Mustard Oil. Mustard Oil is proven to be one of the largest plant-based sources of Omega-3. You can add the protective power of Omega-3 to your diet simply by making Mustard Oil your primary cooking medium.

In a world in which one is constantly facing the onslaught of ultra-processed foods, you can take necessary action to protect your brain from the pernicious effects of these foods. Change your lifestyle, change your eating habits, and change your oil. Make Mustard Oil a part of your nutritional choices.
